In an unusual revelation during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, actor Jake Gyllenhaal shared that he opted for prosthetic testicles, known as “neuticles,” for his 7-year-old German Shepherd after the dog underwent neutering surgery.
“It’s kinda been a tough week… I had to cut my dog’s balls off,” Gyllenhaal told Fallon during the episode. When the host questioned if he performed the procedure himself, the actor quipped, “I would have liked to, probably. But a professional should do that.”
The 40-year-old star explained that while he was initially hesitant about the neutering procedure, veterinarians recommended it due to health concerns. That’s when his vet introduced him to neuticles – testicular implants created in 1995 that allow pets to “retain their natural look and self-esteem.”
“I said no, of course. But then I was like, ‘Well, what do they look like?'” Gyllenhaal recounted as Fallon laughed. “I ended up calling my doctor the night before surgery and saying, ‘Can we get these neuticles?’… Long story short, he has neuticles.”
The Guilty actor even revealed he chose gorilla-sized implants for his German Shepherd. When asked about his dog’s current condition, Gyllenhaal assured, “He’s great. He’s fine. He’s healthy. He’s happy. He has no recollection whatsoever.”
Gyllenhaal’s decision comes at a time when discussions about canine neutering practices are evolving. The actor has previously expressed his deep affection for dogs, telling W Magazine in 2019, “I love dogs. I just love them. They are so playful. I think they bring that out in us, if we allow it.” His commitment to his four-legged companion even extended to rescuing a stray Dalmatian from oncoming traffic in New York City that same year.
“I don’t think I’m that playful, generally. I need to be reminded of it. So, they remind me of that,” the actor shared in his W Magazine interview, highlighting the special bond he shares with his canine companion.
