Indonesian Gen-Zers Are Renting High-End Phones by the Day

In Indonesia, a growing number of young people are choosing to rent premium smartphones rather than buy them. What seemed like a luxury has now become an affordable, on-demand service.

19-year-old freelancer Riza is a part this trend. About once a month, she rents a high-end smartphone to scan documents for her work. Her personal phone, cracked and unreliable, often blurs images or closes applications unexpectedly. But when she uses a rented premium device, everything changes.

“It’s faster and the camera is clearer,” Riza explains. She also rents phones occasionally for travel, gaining access to better memory space and photo quality only when she needs it.

The economics make sense for her lifestyle. Riza spends approximately $86 annually to rent premium smartphones for about 10 days throughout the year. While purchasing a similar phone would cost nearly $500, cheaper per day over time, the upfront expense doesn’t align with her needs or budget.

“I prefer to rent because I have expenses for college, so I need to save,” she says. By renting only when necessary, Riza maintains better cash flow while still accessing high-end technology.

This demand has fueled businesses like the one operated by Hasan in Yogyakarta. His rental service has grown five-fold in just three years, with 80% of requests for iPhones and 20% for Android devices.

Customers can rent phones for as little as six hours or up to one week, with older models costing around $6.50 for 24 hours and the latest releases reaching nearly $25.

Most customers are under 30, driven by specific needs.

“I always observe that first and foremost, they need a way to document things. More precisely, they want to validate that they’ve been somewhere and capture moments well, Hasan said. Others rent for special occasions or celebrations, seeking temporary access to devices they cannot afford to maintain long-term.

In a recent poll, only 3.4% of Indonesians said they were saving money for a new phone during Eid, one of the country’s biggest holidays. Yet the desire for advanced technology remains strong.

For this generation, smartphone rentals represent more than cost savings. They provide flexibility, access to technology, and freedom from long-term financial commitment.
