Cafe Releases CCTV Footage After Food Influencer Tries To Go Viral With A Bad Review

A cat cafe has hit back at a food influencer after she posted a negative review of her visit, releasing CCTV footage that contradicted several of her claims.

The cafe at the center of the dispute is Brews and Mews Cat Cafe. Like many cat cafes, it operates with a set of specific rules around access to its cat room.

Children under six are only permitted inside during designated “happy me hours” on certain days, and guests pay $6 for 30 minutes with the cats. A sign posted at the entrance clearly outlines these rules, stating that the cat room costs $12 per person for one hour and is open to ages seven and up during normal business hours.

TikToker Madalyn, known as the NC Review Girl, visited the cafe with her two young children and posted a video detailing her experience. In it, she explained that she had hyped the visit up to her daughter, who was eager to see the cats, unaware that children were restricted from the cat room at that particular time of day.

When told about the rule by a staff member, Madalyn asked if her daughter could simply peek her head into the room so she could film it for her TikTok review. Staff declined, telling her she would need to return during the appropriate hours.

Madalyn’s main complaint, however, centered on what she described as staff staring at her as she left the cafe with her upset child. In her original video she said, “She’s literally bawling her eyes out and they were just like standing there staring.”

Brews and Mews responded by posting CCTV footage of the visit, playing audio from Madalyn’s original video alongside it. The footage told a different story.

A customer inside the cat room briefly glanced over as Madalyn and her children left, which appears to have been a passing look rather than the sustained staring Madalyn described. A staff member in the footage was seen approaching the same customer to deliver a drink, and the two could be heard talking about the cats, with no mention of Madalyn at all.

The cafe’s caption on the response video read: “Imagine trying to go out into the wild as an influencer and get upset because you did zero research and somehow making it the business fault when they won’t bend the rules for you. Then imagine lying about how you and your kid were just stared at while she cried. The kid was very well behaved. No meltdown, no bawing, just some pouting, which 100% is okay. Lady, we are literally working. No one is paying you any attention.”

Madalyn later deleted her original video and posted an apology, acknowledging that she had misread the situation. “Whenever I was leaving, I fullheartedly believed that they were staring at me when in fact we just made eye contact,” she said. “In that moment, I was overstimulated. I was uncomfortable trying to pick up my child as I had my other one already, which is not easy to do. So, I do believe I misinterpreted that interaction. For that, I apologize. At no point have I meant to lie. I was simply speaking on my perspective of things.”

Not everyone accepted the apology as genuine. Creator Bo Gran argued that Madalyn’s apology sidestepped the core issue.

“She’s not actually apologizing,” Grant said. “All she’s apologizing for is telling people that all she gives is good reviews, but then posted this absolutely horrible review and got caught posting a bad review.”
