Jack Black Reportedly Asked Famous Girlfriend to Dry Off with a Bath Mat Back in the Day

Jack Black has long been known for his offbeat humor and eccentric personality, but a resurfaced anecdote from comedian Kathy Griffin adds a rather unhygienic twist to his reputation. In a recent TikTok video, Griffin revisited her brief romance with the Tenacious D frontman, recalling a particularly eyebrow-raising moment from their time together in the ’90s.

Griffin shared a throwback photo of herself and Black looking cozy on a couch, reminiscing about how their relationship—though casual—earned her some unexpected street cred. “This is a picture of me and my then-boyfriend, Jack Black, who you probably know mostly from School of Rock,” she said. “So he was the first boyfriend I ever had where other bros thought I was cool because I was dating him. By the way, dating is a very loose term.”

However, it was her story about showering at Black’s apartment that truly stood out. “I took a shower at his place and said, ‘I need a shower towel.’ And he goes, ‘You’re standing on it,'” Griffin recalled. “You guys, that’s straight guys. He had one bath mat/towel that he used for both, and that was it. So naturally, I kept sleeping with him.”

This isn’t the first time Griffin has poked fun at their brief romance. In her 2009 memoir, Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin, she wrote about their short-lived fling, humorously stating, “That’s right. I f—ed Jack Black. Okay, we went out only two or three times, but that’s a relationship in my book. And by the way, this is my book.”

During a 2013 appearance on The Talk, Griffin further elaborated on their history, admitting they had hooked up a “handful” of times. “I’m not ashamed, but I’m not proud,” she quipped. She also revealed that Black had met her mother, who had a blunt first impression: “Oh my God, he looks like a serial killer.”

While Griffin has since been married twice—first to Matt Moline from 2001 to 2006 and later to Randy Bick from 2020 until their recent split—Black has been happily married to Tanya Haden since 2006. The couple shares two sons.

Despite the cringe-worthy towel situation, Griffin’s lighthearted recollections paint a picture of a bygone era in Hollywood dating, where hygiene standards were questionable, but the stories were unforgettable.
