Mark Zuckerberg Says AI Can Help People Express Emotions Better

Mark Zuckerberg believes artificial intelligence can help people better articulate their feelings, addressing a challenge many face in expressing themselves emotionally.

During a conversation about AI’s role in human connection, Zuckerberg discussed how people of all ages struggle to communicate their emotions effectively. He sees AI as a tool that can assist in this fundamental aspect of human interaction.

“There’s something that I think is just really deep about being physically present with another person that you don’t get from any other technology today,” Zuckerberg explained when discussing Meta’s vision for AI-enhanced communication.

The Meta CEO addressed concerns about whether AI assistance might weaken people’s communication abilities rather than strengthen them. When asked about the balance between helpful technology and preserving the struggle that builds communication skills, Zuckerberg offered a nuanced perspective.

“Having a tool that can help you do that better isn’t going to mean that like oh now we perfectly understand everything. I mean I think maybe one of the most functional aspects of this you’re already seeing a lot of these AI models really help people,” he said.

Zuckerberg emphasized that improved tools don’t eliminate the need for human effort. “We’re always going to find new things to struggle with,” he noted, suggesting that AI support in emotional expression would create new opportunities for growth rather than replace the development process entirely.

The vision extends beyond simple translation of emotions. Zuckerberg outlined how personalized AI would need context to truly help people communicate.

“There’s all this development that’s going into making the models smarter and smarter over time but I think where this is going to get really compelling is when it’s personalized for you and in order for it to be personalized for you it has to have context and understand what’s going on in your life,” he explained.

According to Zuckerberg, glasses represent the ideal platform for this personalized AI because “they’re positioned on your face in a way where they can let them see what you see and hear what you hear which are the two most important senses that we use for kind of taking information and context about the world.”

Rather than viewing AI assistance as a shortcut that weakens abilities, Zuckerberg framed it as an enhancement that enables people to tackle more complex communication challenges.

“You can always get better at communicating with other people and kind of expressing yourself and understanding other people,” he said.
