President Trump Calls US Olympic Skier “A Real Loser” After He Said He Has Mixed Feelings Representing The US

A dispute has erupted between President Trump and Team USA freestyle skier Hunter Hess following comments the athlete made about his conflicted feelings wearing the American flag at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Hess opened up about his internal struggle during a recent interview, stating: “It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now I think it’s a little hard there’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of and I think a lot of people aren’t.”

The skier attempted to clarify his position, explaining that his participation shouldn’t be interpreted as blanket endorsement of current policies. “If it aligns with my moral values I feel like I’m representing it just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.,” Hess said.

He added: “I just kind of want to do it for my friends and my family and the people that support me getting here.”

President Trump responded swiftly on Truth Social Sunday, writing: “U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics. If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Hess isn’t alone among American winter sports athletes expressing reservations about the current political climate. Several other competitors have voiced similar sentiments during the Games.

Cross-country skiing standout Jessie Diggins posted on Instagram: “I’m racing for an American people who stand for love, for acceptance, for compassion, honesty and respect for others. I do not stand for hate or violence or discrimination.”

Team USA Olympian Svea Irving echoed comparable thoughts, saying: “It’s definitely a tough time in our country right now. I just continue to represent my values which is compassion and respect and love for others.”

Former American Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy, who now competes for Great Britain, also appeared to make a statement through social media, sharing an Instagram photograph showing a message written in snow criticizing immigration enforcement agencies.
