Prominent Male Stylist Roasts Conor McGregor, Uses Him as an Example How Not to Dress

Conor McGregor may have conquered the octagon, but when it comes to fashion, he remains a cautionary tale. At least, that’s the verdict from Derek Guy, one of the most prominent voices in men’s style, who has made a habit of dissecting McGregor’s fashion choices with a level of precision that would make a tailor blush.

Guy, who skyrocketed to Twitter fame after using George Costanza to explain the basics of men’s fashion, has been relentless in his critique of McGregor’s wardrobe. His tweets have consistently pointed out the UFC star’s preference for tight, ill-fitting suits that, according to Guy, do nothing to flatter his muscular physique.

Squeezing into Bad Taste

“It’s hard to convince athletic men that they don’t have to squeeze into the tightest suits possible because many want to show off their hard work (understandably),” Guy tweeted on January 16, 2024. “But when you look at Domingo, his build is not that different from McGregor’s. Yet a well-cut suit flatters more.”

McGregor’s tendency to wear aggressively slim-fit suits has long been a subject of debate.

Many athletes struggle with tailoring due to their broad shoulders and tapered waists, but, as Guy has repeatedly demonstrated, there are plenty of ways to make a muscular build look elegant—McGregor just isn’t employing any of them.

Cheap Looks at Luxury Prices

Perhaps the most harsh of Guy’s assessments came on September 7, 2024, when he remarked:

“One thing I appreciate about Conor McGregor is no matter how rich he gets, he always looks like he could only afford $200 for a suit.”

For a man who prides himself on his wealth and status, that’s a damning critique. Guy doubled down, comparing McGregor’s attire to bargain-bin fashion:

“This fit is no different from $30 suits on Shein, even down to the lack of pattern matching across the pockets. This is what class solidarity looks like.”

If there’s one thing McGregor has never aspired to be, it’s “working class” in appearance. Yet, according to Guy, his fashion choices betray an ignorance of true luxury.

The ‘F* You’ Suit: High Wealth, Low Taste**

McGregor’s infamous “F*** You” pinstripe suit, worn during the press tour for his boxing match against Floyd Mayweather, has been a divisive moment in sports fashion history. When asked about it, Guy didn’t mince words:

“Mubarak did something similar. A sign of high wealth and low taste.”

In other words, just because something is expensive doesn’t mean it’s stylish.

What McGregor Gets Wrong About Tailoring

McGregor’s suits, though custom-made, fail to adhere to classic tailoring principles. As Guy explains:

“McGregor wears custom suits, but his team (from what I’ve seen) is not made of serious clothing people—more like salespeople. He also has bad taste. There are lots of ways for custom tailoring to go wrong, especially if an unknowledgeable client keeps interfering with the process.”

The problem, according to Guy, is that McGregor isn’t simply dressing to accentuate his body—he’s blindly following outdated trends meant for slim models rather than well-built athletes.

“Are these guys getting this type of tailoring to celebrate their body? Or are they simply ignorant about tailoring and following 20+ year old trends built for waif-like models? IMO, it’s the second.”

A Lesson in What Not to Do

For fans of menswear, Guy’s critiques serve as both entertainment and education. While McGregor’s suits may scream money, they lack the refinement expected of true sartorial excellence. The lesson? Flashy, tight, and short doesn’t equal stylish.

McGregor has proven himself as a fighter, but when it comes to fashion, he remains his own worst opponent.
