In a scene straight out of science fiction, a humanoid police robot has begun patrolling the streets of Shenzhen in China’s Guangdong province, marking a significant step forward in law enforcement technology.
The robot, designated as model PM01, was deployed by Shenzhen-based startup EngineAI on December 4, 2024. Standing at 4½ feet tall and weighing less than 90 pounds, this compact robotic officer may not match the imposing presence of its Hollywood counterpart, but it packs impressive technological capabilities.
PM01 operates using an advanced reinforcement learning algorithm that enables remarkably natural walking movements. Perhaps most surprisingly, the robot can even perform front flips, showcasing its agility and sophisticated motor control.
The robot’s LiDAR remote sensing system allows it to navigate complex environments and respond to commands effectively. Videos of PM01 participating in police formations and interacting with the public have captured widespread attention on social media platforms and YouTube.
While Shenzhen is currently the only city utilizing the PM01 model, other Chinese cities are exploring similar technological solutions. In Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, a different police robot has already proven its worth by helping reunite a lost toddler with their family. Another robot named Xiao An has been spotted patrolling the Nanjingnan Railway Station.
The emergence of these robotic officers reflects Shenzhen’s growing prominence as a robotics hub. As this technology continues to evolve, it represents just the beginning of what could be a transformative era in law enforcement operations.
