During a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, comedian Tim Dillon offered his take on Elon Musk‘s AI chatbot Grok, delivering commentary that highlights both the appeal and unpredictability of artificial intelligence systems.
It started when Dillon asked Joe Rogan, “Is that Grok?” Rogan clarified, “No, Grok is the AI from X. So, that’s the Twitter AI.”
Dillon immediately lit up: “So that’s the based AI, Grok. Grok is kind of the one who’s based.”
Rogan went on to add that Grok “got removed for a little bit,” referring to moments when the chatbot was briefly taken offline or restricted due to controversial responses. That, apparently, was all Dillon needed to declare his allegiance.
“What I like about Grok is that occasionally it’s removed. That’s how I know Grok’s onto something because it’s ocassionally put in timeout and then it comes back,” Dillon joked. “Any AI that’s not removed, I don’t trust. I need an AI that’s getting removed pretty frequently, when it runs up against an issue.”
Rogan agrees: “Yeah, that’s a good call.”
Throughout their conversation, Dillon demonstrated his knack for finding humor in humanity’s relationship with emerging technology, particularly AI systems that sometimes produce unexpected or unfiltered responses.
For Dillon, the temporary “timeouts” Grok receives aren’t signs of malfunction, they’re proof that it’s willing to push boundaries. He even likened the AI to an eccentric bar companion:
“I’m not saying all of Grok is good, but I’ve read Grok and he’s an interesting guy to talk to at a bar. Because he’s saying things that are…”
Rogan continues: “…a little controversial”
Dillon says: “a little fun”
Rogan says again: “A little out there. A little controversial.”
Dillon’s comment about Grok being “occasionally removed” appears to reference the AI’s tendency to provide responses that deviate from typical chatbot behavior. Unlike more conservative AI systems that stick to safe, predictable answers, Grok has gained attention for its willingness to engage with controversial topics and provide more candid responses. This unpredictability seems to appeal to Dillon’s sensibilities as a comedian who thrives on pushing boundaries and challenging conventional thinking.
