Woman Blamed for Multiple Car Crashes After Moving Traffic Mirror Over Feng Shui Fears

A Shanghai resident’s attempt to improve her home’s feng shui by repeatedly adjusting a traffic mirror has led to a series of accidents in her residential community. The incident prompted police intervention.

According to sources, residents in the Shanghai compound noticed an alarming pattern of collisions for two months occurring at a sharp turn within their neighbourhood. The traffic mirror, which had been installed when the development opened in 2012, appeared to be frequently moved from its proper position. It created a safety hazard for drivers navigating the dangerous curve.

Property management staff worked to correct the mirror’s placement multiple times, but the repositioning continued to occur.

An investigation eventually uncovered the source of the problem: a woman living in an apartment directly across from the mirror had been repeatedly adjusting it due to concerns about its impact on her family’s feng shui.

According to traditional Chinese beliefs, feng shui involves the arrangement of objects and spaces to create harmony and balance with natural forces. Practitioners believe that improperly positioned items, particularly reflective surfaces like mirrors, can direct negative energy toward a home and bring misfortune to its occupants.

The woman reportedly experienced what she perceived as a period of bad luck affecting both her family and their health, which she attributed to the traffic mirror’s position. This led her to take matters into her own hands by continually moving the mirror to what she believed was a more favorable angle for her household.

However, her actions had serious consequences for the community. Each time she adjusted the mirror, it compromised its ability to properly reflect oncoming traffic to drivers approaching the sharp turn, resulting in multiple crashes.

Authorities were called in to address the situation. Police warned that such behavior, motivated by superstitious beliefs, could potentially constitute an offense given the public safety risks involved.
