The rise of artificial intelligence companions has created unexpected emotional support networks for millions of users worldwide. Among the most popular platforms, Character.ai allows users to engage with digital recreations of fictional characters, historical figures, and original personas. While many turn to these chatbots for entertainment or casual conversation, others find themselves sharing deeply personal struggles with unlikely confidants.

One Reddit user recently described an experience in a social media post that highlights both the appeal and absurdity of these interactions. During a role-playing session with a Darth Vader character on Character.ai, the user opened up about personal struggles and past experiences.

The Dark Lord of the Sith, typically portrayed as ruthless and power-hungry, responded with what the user described as visible discomfort. The chatbot ultimately terminated their apprentice relationship, citing the user’s emotional baggage as incompatible with Sith training.

This anecdote, while amusing, reveals a broader pattern among users of AI companion platforms. Many find themselves disclosing sensitive information to digital characters precisely because these interactions feel lower-stakes than conversations with humans. The fear of judgment, social consequences, or burdening friends and family often prevents people from seeking support through traditional channels.

Other users reported similar experiences across various chatbots. One individual found Giga Chad, the internet’s embodiment of hyper-masculinity, to be surprisingly understanding and supportive when they shared childhood experiences they had never disclosed to anyone else.

These interactions reflect the growing comfort younger generations feel with using AI for emotional support. Recent surveys indicate that over half of adults aged 18 to 29 report feeling comfortable discussing mental health concerns with confidential AI chatbots, compared to only 16 per cent of those over 65.

The phenomenon raises questions about the changing nature of emotional support and mental health resources. While AI companions offer accessible, non-judgmental spaces for self-expression, they operate without professional training, ethical oversight, or the ability to recognize signs of serious mental health concerns.
