The legendary hitman franchise is set to continue as Lionsgate executive confirms another chapter in the saga is in development.
During a preview event for the John Wick Experience in Las Vegas, Jenefer Brown, EVP and Head of Global Products & Experiences at Lionsgate, revealed that the beloved action franchise will return for a fifth installment.
“This world continues to grow and expand in incredible ways,” Brown told ComicBook.com. “Up next, of course, we have Ballerina, which is our first spin-off movie and [we] can’t wait for that to release to the world. Of course, we’ve announced we’re working on a fifth John Wick film.”
The announcement comes as a surprise to many fans who believed the main storyline had concluded with John Wick: Chapter 4. When asked about the fate of the main character, Brown remained cryptic, stating, “We’ve shared that we’re developing a fifth John Wick film… [John Wick] may be [dead]. We are all on baited breath waiting to find out.”
The franchise, which began in 2014, has consistently grown in scope and popularity with each release. Currently, the universe is expanding beyond films with The Continental TV series and the upcoming spinoff film “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” scheduled for release on June 6th.
Brown also hinted at further expansions, mentioning “more spinoffs to come, a TV series, video game.”
While Keanu Reeves, who previously expressed belief in his character’s demise, is confirmed to appear in the upcoming Ballerina, his involvement in the fifth installment remains uncertain.
In a recent interview with Extra TV, Keanu Reeves discussed the future of the John Wick franchise, maintaining a clear stance on his character’s fate following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4.
When asked about potential future John Wick appearances, Reeves confirmed that fans can expect to see the character make a brief appearance in “Ballerina,” an upcoming film set in the John Wick universe. However, regarding any additional John Wick installments, Reeves was direct about the character’s status, stating:
“The character’s dead. He died in John Chapter 4.”
When pressed about whether he would consider returning to the role despite his character’s fate, Reeves acknowledged the nature of Hollywood storytelling with a knowing response, saying:
“I know, I know it’s the Hollywood story.”
The announcement was made during the launch of the John Wick Experience, a 12,000-square-foot interactive attraction at AREA15 in Las Vegas, where guests can immerse themselves in the stylized world of the franchise through themed environments and interactive storytelling.
