Court Annuls Marriage in Netherlands Over ChatGPT Speech

A Dutch couple’s wedding has been declared legally invalid after a court determined that their officiant used an artificial intelligence chatbot to generate the ceremony script.

The pair from Zwolle, Netherlands, exchanged vows in April 2025, but their union was officially annulled on January 7, 2026, when it came to light that the person conducting their ceremony had relied on ChatGPT to write the wedding speech. According to Reuters, the AI-generated script failed to include the legally required declarations that couples must make to fulfill their marriage duties under Dutch law.

The ChatGPT-created speech contained sentimental phrases like “not only husband and wife, but above all a team, a crazy couple, each other’s love and home base” and “continue supporting each other, teasing each other and embracing each other, even when life gets difficult.” While these words may have sounded appropriate for a wedding celebration, they didn’t fulfill the legal requirements for a binding marriage ceremony.

Dutch law requires specific language to be spoken during wedding ceremonies, ensuring that couples formally commit to their marital obligations. The ChatGPT-generated speech simply didn’t include these mandatory declarations, rendering the entire ceremony legally void.

The court’s ruling emphasized that despite understanding the emotional significance of the wedding date to the couple, legal requirements could not be overlooked. “The court understands that the date in the marriage deed is important to the man and woman, but cannot ignore what the law says,” the decision stated.

As a result of the annulment, the court has ordered that the marriage be removed from the Zwolle registry entirely. The identities of the couple have not been publicly disclosed, and it remains unknown whether they have since held a legally valid ceremony or plan to do so in the future.

AI tools have become increasingly popular for drafting everything from business emails to social media posts. However, legal ceremonies require precision and adherence to established protocols.
