Iron’ Robot Fell To Its Face During A Demo

China’s electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng Motors experienced an unexpected moment of viral attention over the weekend. Their humanoid robot, Iron, took an unexpected tumble during a public demonstration at a Shenzhen shopping mall.

According to sources, the 178cm robot, designed to move with humanlike grace, had successfully completed a smooth walk to the center stage in front of hundreds of spectators on Saturday. However, while standing still, Iron lost its balance and toppled backwards.

A quick-thinking staff member attempted to break the fall, but the machine ended up face down on the ground before being whisked away by the team.

The incident quickly became a sensation across Chinese social media.

By Monday morning, the robot’s plunge had become the fourth most searched topic on Baidu. It also claimed the top trending spot on ByteDance’s news platform Jinri Toutiao the previous evening, according to data from Entobit.cn.

Rather than retreat from the spotlight, Xpeng’s leadership addressed the mishap with perspective. “It reminds me of how all toddlers learn to walk,” He Xiaopeng, co-founder and CEO of Xpeng, posted on Weibo Sunday. “After a fall, they will stand firm; the next step is to begin running, and to keep running.”

The demonstration took an interesting turn when organizers decided to address questions about Iron’s authenticity. In another event, the team made the last-minute decision to use scissors to cut through the robot’s outer layers.

“Before us, we ourselves have not tried cutting its skin and muscles while the robot is powered on. So, in the last hour, we decided to do this,” one presenter explained. “Our robot team was very opposed. They were worried it might fall. They were worried it might get damaged.”

The impromptu dissection revealed Iron’s internal structure, including what the team described as skin, muscles, and skeletal components layered with protective filling and external wrapping.
