Lenovo laptop freezes during Jimmy Fallon segment meant to promote it

In what should have been a showcase moment for innovative technology, a Lenovo laptop experienced an awkward malfunction during a segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. YouTube tech personality Linus Sebastian appeared on the show to demonstrate cutting-edge gadgets, but the expandable laptop became the unexpected star for all the wrong reasons.

Linus Sebastian, host of the popular Linus Tech Tips channel, brought an array of futuristic devices to the late-night program. After successfully demonstrating bone-conduction lollipops that play music through your teeth and headphones that transform into Bluetooth speakers, he moved on to what he called his favorite product: a Lenovo laptop with an expanding screen.

The device was designed to address a limitation Sebastian had shown on a previous Tonight Show appearance. While earlier models expanded vertically, this new Lenovo prototype stretches horizontally from 16 inches to 21.5 inches, matching the wider aspect ratio of human peripheral vision. The concept aims to provide better immersion for gaming and movie watching.

However, when it came time for the big reveal, the laptop refused to cooperate. As Linus prepared to demonstrate the expansion feature, the device froze.

This prompted Linus to pause with a nervous laugh: “Hold on a sec.” Both Fallon and guest Marcelo Hernández joined Linus in attempting to hilariously coax the laptop into action, with them joking about the situation to ease the tension.

Marcelo leaned in, squinting at the frozen device, and joked: “I can tell it wants to do it.”

Fallon immediately reframed the mishap, saying: “This happens to a lot of, uh, laptops, okay? Don’t take this personally. It’s first time… in front of people and stuff.”

Marcelo piled on with, “It’s not a show-er,” to which Fallon added, “Definitely not a grower.” Marcelo even capped it with, “You know, there’s medicine for this.”

Trying to steer things back on track, Linus explained what should have been happening. “It expands all the way from 16 inches… wider, to 21.5 inches. A very average expansion,” he said,  leaning into the joke.

The hosts made light of the technical difficulty with humor, comparing the laptop’s failure to perform to stage fright.

The segment eventually moved on to other demonstrations, including a robot vacuum capable of climbing stairs, which successfully performed its function and helped salvage the appearance. Despite the laptop malfunction, Sebastian’s other gadgets impressed the audience and hosts.
