Dave Chappelle Accused Of Hypocrisy Over Trans Joke Controversy As Critics Call For Him To Take Responsibility

During a recent live chat, MMA commentator and media personality Luke Thomas was prompted by a viewer comment about Dave Chappelle, responding with criticism of the comedian over what Thomas characterized as a pattern of repeated behavior that Chappelle has already lived through once before.

Thomas opened by referencing a point he credited to someone else on Twitter. “There was someone else on Twitter saying this the other day, so I’m taking their point, but it was a very, very good one,” he said. He then laid out the argument directly.

“The guy quits the Chappelle show because during one of the rehearsals or recordings for a skit, there was a white guy who laughed at a joke about black people too hard and it rubbed him such the wrong way that he like literally went to Africa,” Thomas said. “It’s like get away from it all. And then never redid another season of Chappelle Show.”

Thomas connected that moment to Chappelle’s current situation, noting the comedian’s continued output of trans-focused material and his subsequent complaints about how audiences receive it.

“And here he is again making like just special after special of trans jokes, and he’s like, ‘People are weaponizing it in a direction I don’t like.'”

Thomas did not dismiss Chappelle’s feelings outright but argued the comedian has no room to be caught off guard. “Dave, buddy, I’m not saying you can’t have feelings about people using your content in ways you don’t like, but you’ve been through this already and you’re doing it again. You got to take some responsibility at some point, you know, like what are you doing ultimately?”

He went further, framing it as a lesson about accountability for what any public figure puts into the world. “How the world receives it as things you cannot necessarily be in control of. So you have to be careful what you do put out in the world if those kinds of forces later on give you pause.”

Thomas closed his remarks on Chappelle with a personal note, saying, “Also, I just don’t believe him. But, you know, that’s a separate point.”
